If you’re looking for a getaway destination or self-catering accommodation close to Cape Town, look no further. The Saronsberg estate is situated just outside Tulbagh and this is where Pieter and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary this past weekend.
I visited Saronsberg about a year ago with friends and fell in love with their cellar and tasting room’s building style. I love the rustic, open plan layout and the high windows – it’s a very similar style that we want for our farm house (one day).
Their self-catering cottages are fairly new (about a year or two old if I’m not mistaken) and with Tulbagh just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, it’s definitely a fantastic destination for a mini getaway. Saronsberg’s cottages are pet-friendly which is a huge bonus for us, so we took Emma with us. She LOVED the open spaces and got to meet a horse for the first time – a very funny encounter that I wish I recorded 😉
We’ve been to Tulbagh a few times before so we didn’t spend much time exploring the town or other wine farms. We were quite content to spend the day at our cottage reading, drinking wine, braaiing and napping.
Sunday was our one year wedding anniversary and we celebrated in the most suitable manner…with bubbles. Thank you to Kleine Zalza for the gift, we were meant to drink it with the launch episode of Seasons at Terroir but we don’t have DSTV so I saved the bottle for this (very special) occasion.
All in all it was a great weekend. We stopped in Riebeek Kasteel for lunch on our way back to Cape Town and this is something I’d definitely recommend. Riebeek Kasteel has the most amazing little restaurants – even if you’re just bored on a Sunday, why not take a drive out there for lunch? We’ll definitely be doing it again in the near future.
