I receive mails from StyleDiary readers on a regular basis and it always makes my day. Mostly the emails are to ask for advice on starting a fashion blog or to ask about my favourite designers, where I shop and / or how I became a fashion blogger. I decided to dedicate a post to these questions 🙂
How did you start your blog?
StyleDiary was actually a project that I started about 4 years ago when I started working at an online marketing agency. I wanted to learn more about coding and design so I started up a WordPress blog. I love fashion so it was only natural that the blog focused on fashion. Back then, what I used to do is visit shops, take photos and mix and match outfits with prices, store names etc with each outfit and each outfit made up a blog post. I ‘killed’ the blog after a year or so as I just didn’t have the time to go ‘shopping’ as often as I’d like. About a year and a half ago I revived StyleDiary as a personal fashion and style blog. Now most of the content on the blog focus on my fashion choices, daily outfits, favourite beauty products, events I attend and just general ‘stuff.’
Is it difficult to sustain a fashion blog?
It depends on what you mean. It takes time to take photos and put posts together but it is also so much fun. In terms of the finances needed – the basics that you will need is a self-hosted website (if you prefer) and if you’d like to customise the blog to some extend, you’ll need to ask a friend or developer to help you with a nice theme. Fashion blogging is just a hobby for me. When I’m not blogging I’m a marketing consultant that run my own marketing agency. I also lecture a UCT marketing course through GetSmarter. StyleDiary is one of the fun things that I do on the side.
Which fashion blogs do you follow?
I have a few favourites but I mostly enjoy to read magazines and get fashion inspiration and tips from them. My favourite magazines are Glamour and Grazia. My favourite websites are TheBeautyDepartment.com, LookBook.nu and Pinterest.
Do you have any tips for starting a blog?
Most definitely 🙂 Firstly, find a blogging platform that works for you (I prefer WordPress but there’s also Tumblr and Blogger) and write about things you are passionate about. You will see that some of my posts focus on food and recipes too, so it’s not all fashion. I am most definitely not the best writer out there (my first language is Afrikaans but I write in English) but who cares? I enjoy blogging about fashion and for me, that’s what it’s all about. Haters will hate but whatever – they have to deal with their underlying personal issues that’s causing the sub tweets / gossip / false rumours. Do what you love to do and the readers will come. It’s not a competition.
If you have any additional questions for me – drop me an email on email@example.com and I will happily answer them. 🙂
